Going meat-free on the trail used to mean heavier, blander food. That has changed - just not evenly. We pulled every meal in our 284-meal database that its own maker labels vegan: 41 of them, from 9 brands. The honest headline is that vegan meals skew a little less calorie-dense than the database as a whole - a median of 113 cal/oz - so weight discipline matters more here. But the best of them close the gap entirely, topping out at 167 cal/oz, and a few carry real protein. No brand paid to be here; these are ranked on the nutrition label, not the marketing.

How we ranked - and one caveat

A meal appears here only if the brand itself labels it vegan in the data we captured - we never infer a diet from an ingredient list. A missing label means the brand did not tag the meal, not that it contains animal products; and a vegan label is the brand's own claim, not our verification. If shared-facility or trace-ingredient concerns matter to you, check the current package before you buy.

Every figure comes from our database of 284 freeze-dried and dehydrated meals across 14 brands, captured 2026-07-28, using each brand's own published nutrition and pricing. Meals are ranked on calories per ounce (density), with protein per 1,000 kcal and cost per 1,000 kcal shown alongside. Prices marked with a dash are either unpublished or a currency-converted estimate we do not quote as a firm dollar figure. Prices and specs are not live - we link to brand and retailer pages so you can confirm before buying. No brand paid for placement, and no meal was taste-tested.
