Brand profile
- Expedition Foods is a UK freeze-dried meal maker founded in 1995 in Yorkshire, per its own about page - independently corroborated by the “since 1995” wording printed on its own packaging, as quoted in an independent gear review. Its current UK company registration (Companies House) dates to 2009 in Hull, East Yorkshire - a later filing, not evidence against the earlier founding date. It markets itself as the maker of Europe's first purpose-built expedition freeze-dried meals, a brand claim we have not independently verified.
- Its own about page names British Antarctic Survey scientists, David Attenborough's film crews, and polar explorers Lou Rudd MBE (the first person to traverse Antarctica twice using human power alone) and Wendy Searle among its users, and states its meals were voted the most preferred brand at the 4 Deserts Ultramarathon Series - claims from the brand itself, not independently confirmed here.

Who Expedition Foods suits - and who should look elsewhere
Built from the 284-meal database, not opinion - the same facts anyone can check in the table below.
Good fit if…
- You want the most calories per ounce you can buy: at 140.3 cal/oz average, Expedition Foods ranks #2 of 14 brands, and its densest meal, 5 Bean Cassoulet at 167 cal/oz, is the #4 densest of all 284 meals we track.
- You eat vegetarian, vegan, dairy-free, or gluten-free: 19 of 23 meals carry at least one diet tag - 13 vegetarian, 12 gluten-free, 9 dairy-free, and 6 vegan.
- You're comparing cost before you buy: all 23 of 23 meals carry a published GBP price, and at a converted $19.07 per 1,000 kcal average it's the #5-cheapest of 13 priced brands - despite the premium expedition branding.
Look elsewhere if…
- You're optimising for protein, not just calories: Expedition Foods averages just 32.4 g of protein per 1,000 kcal, ranking #11 of 14 brands - only Adventure Food, Strive Food, and Tent Meals rank lower.
- You need to know servings per pouch before you buy: none of Expedition Foods' 23 meals publish a servings count in our data, versus Peak Refuel where every one of its 20 meals states 2 servings - check the pack yourself for how many it feeds.
- You have a food allergy: Expedition Foods publishes no allergen information for any of its 23 meals in our database - that's a gap in our data, not a claim the meals are free of common allergens. Check the pack label yourself.

For the best value in the Expedition Foods lineup, Vegetable Fried Rice - Big Pack is the pick: $14.60 per 1,000 kcal - the cheapest cost-per-calorie of any of the brand's 23 meals - while still delivering 153.5 cal/oz, well above the brand's own 140.3 average, and 25.8 g of protein across 1,088 calories.

Where the data says Expedition Foods is strong - and weak
Computed from all 284 meals in our database, not opinion.
Strong
- 2nd-highest average calorie density of any of the 14 brands in our database: 140.3 cal/oz, behind only Peak Refuel (145.3) and ahead of Radix Nutrition (137.4) and Mountain House (131).
- 3 of the top 10 most calorie-dense individual meals in our entire 284-meal database are Expedition Foods: 5 Bean Cassoulet (#4, 167 cal/oz), its Big Pack version (#5, 166.9), and Vegan Thai Green Curry (#8, 162.6) - only Peak Refuel has more in that top 10, with 4.
- Full price coverage: all 23 of 23 meals carry a published GBP price, and at a converted $19.07 per 1,000 kcal average it's the 5th-cheapest of the 13 USD-priced brands in our database - cheaper on average than Backpacker's Pantry ($20.84), Trailtopia ($20.91), and Mountain House ($23.31).
- High diet-tag coverage: 19 of 23 meals (83%) carry at least one diet tag, including 13 vegetarian and 12 gluten-free meals - far higher coverage than Peak Refuel's 3 of 20.
Weak
- Near the bottom on protein: just 32.4 g of protein per 1,000 kcal on average, ranking 11th of 14 brands - behind Packit Gourmet (66.6), LyoFood (60.3), Campers Pantry (55.8), Wild Zora (55.1), Mountain House (52.7), Peak Refuel (46.5), Good To-Go (45.7), Backpacker's Pantry (45.4), Radix Nutrition (44.3), and Trailtopia (41.9). Only Adventure Food, Strive Food, and Tent Meals rank lower.
- No servings data at all: none of the 23 meals in our database publish a servings-per-pouch figure, so we cannot compute a per-serving price the way we can for Peak Refuel (2 servings on every meal) or Mountain House.
- No allergen data published for any of its 23 meals in our database - a gap in our records, not a claim the meals are free of common allergens. Check the pack yourself if you have a food allergy.
- Thin on variety outside mains: just 1 breakfast and 3 desserts against 19 mains, and zero snacks or lunches - narrower than Mountain House's 10-breakfast, 31-main spread.
