Vegetarian is the widest-open diet on the trail. Of the 284 meals in our database, 83 from 8 brands carry a vegetarian label - the broadest coverage of any diet we track, and roughly double the vegan count. Because it allows dairy and egg, the vegetarian shelf is both more varied and, at the top end, higher in protein than a strictly vegan one. Density still runs a touch below the database as a whole (a median of 115 cal/oz), so the picks below lead with the meals that give you the most food for the least pack weight, then the best value and the most protein. Ranked on the label, not the marketing.

How we ranked - and one caveat
A meal appears here only if the brand itself labels it vegetarian in the data we captured - we never infer a diet from an ingredient list, and vegetarian here means the brand's own claim (it typically allows dairy and egg but not meat or fish). A missing label means the brand did not tag the meal, not that it contains meat. Check the current package before you buy if a specific ingredient matters to you.
Every figure comes from our database of 284 freeze-dried and dehydrated meals across 14 brands, captured 2026-07-28, using each brand's own published nutrition and pricing. Meals are ranked on calories per ounce (density), with protein per 1,000 kcal and cost per 1,000 kcal shown alongside. Prices marked with a dash are either unpublished or a currency-converted estimate we do not quote as a firm dollar figure. Prices and specs are not live - we link to brand and retailer pages so you can confirm before buying. No brand paid for placement, and no meal was taste-tested.
