Backpacker's Pantry and Mountain House are two of the oldest names in freeze-dried food, and they solve the trail-food problem from opposite ends. Backpacker's Pantry is the value-and-variety brand - cheaper, and with a diet label on almost every meal. Mountain House is the density-and-protein giant, with the biggest catalogue we track. We put all 33 Backpacker's Pantry meals and all 41 Mountain House meals into the same 284-meal database and compared them on calories per ounce, protein, cost and diet coverage. No brand paid to be here, and we have not taste-tested either - this compares the published data, not the flavour.
The verdict at a glance
The head-to-head on the six figures that matter most, averaged across each brand's whole lineup in our database. The greener cell wins each row; catalogue size is reported but not scored, since more meals is not automatically better.
| Metric | Backpacker's Pantry | Mountain House |
|---|---|---|
| Meals in our database | 33 | 41 |
| Avg calorie density cal/oz | 115.5 | 131.0✓ |
| Avg protein g/1,000 kcal | 45.4 | 52.7✓ |
| Avg cost $/1,000 kcal | $20.84✓ | $23.31 |
| Median pouch price $ | $9.99✓ | $12.49 |
| Diet-tag coverage share of lineup | 32 of 33✓ | 0 of 41 |
Neither brand publishes serving counts for most of its lineup in our data, so unlike a Peak Refuel comparison there is no per-serving asterisk here - Backpacker's Pantry is simply cheaper on both the sticker price and the cost per calorie.
Where Backpacker's Pantry wins
Backpacker's Pantry is the pick if your shortlist is shaped by a diet or a budget. It tags 32 of its 33 meals with at least one diet label - 23 gluten-free, 19 vegetarian, 8 vegan - the broadest coverage of any sizeable lineup we track, while Mountain House tags none. It is also the cheaper brand on both cost measures, and it is the only one of the two that puts 4 desserts on the trail. Independent reviews of the food itself are genuinely split - see the brand hub for both sides.

Backpacker's Pantry Granola with Blueberries, Almonds & Milk

Where Mountain House wins

At 41 meals it is also the biggest single-brand lineup we track, with more breakfasts (10 to 6) to rotate through on a long trip.

How we compared
Every figure here comes from our database of 284 freeze-dried and dehydrated meals across 14 brands, captured 2026-07-28, using each brand's own published nutrition and pricing. Brand averages cover each brand's complete lineup in our data (33 Backpacker's Pantry meals, 41 Mountain House). Calorie density is compared as calories per ounce and cost as price per 1,000 kcal - both size-independent, so a bigger pouch cannot flatter a brand. Diet coverage is counted as the share of each lineup carrying at least one tag, not a raw count, so the larger catalogue is not handed the row for its size. Prices and specs are not live; we link to brand and retailer pages so you can confirm before buying. Brand history is sourced on each brand's hub page. No brand paid for placement, and no meal was taste-tested for this comparison.
